Previous Calls for Proposals

SCIENCE AND HERITAGE PROGRAMME CALL FOR RESEARCH CLUSTER PROPOSALS

AHRC and EPSRC have announced a Call for Research Clusters under their jointly funded Science and Heritage Programme, by making funding available to support cross-disciplinary network activities. AHRC will be administering this call on behalf of the AHRC and EPSRC.

The call for proposals within the Programme aims to support innovative cross-sector and interdisciplinary networking activities, falling within research ‘clusters’. Proposals with full economic costs of up to £30,000 and lasting for a period of between 4 and 12 months may be submitted. It is expected that the Programme will fund around 10 clusters through this Call.

Proposals are sought that explore ideas from one of the following six themes which are expected to be studied further during the period of the award. The themes are:
  • Nature of transformation
  • Authenticity, authentication and security
  • Interpretation and representation
  • Cultural encounters and explorations
  • Human and machine interfaces
  • Resilience and adaptation
The Research Cluster awards are intended to facilitate interactions between researchers and stakeholders from a range of disciplines and institutions, and each award will be expected to include participants drawn from subject areas from both AHRC and EPSRC remits. The participants must be drawn from a number of different types of research organisations (higher education, research institutions, heritage institutions, museums, galleries, libraries and archives), in order to achieve the kind of intellectual interaction and exchange envisaged. Awards will cover the operating and support costs involved in establishing and organising the operation of a Research Cluster, which will be a forum for the discussion and exchange of ideas on a specified thematic area, complex issue or problem.

Proposals must be submitted through the cross-council Joint Electronic Submission (Je-S) System. Please note that in order to coordinate the work of the Research Clusters, all awards must have a start date between 1 December 2008 and 31 March 2009.

The closing date for the receipt of proposals is 4pm on Thursday 4th September 2008.

Copies of the Research Clusters specification and details of the Call can be downloaded at the bottom of this page and a copy of the AHRC research funding guide can be found on the
AHRC website.

AHRC/EPSRC COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH STUDENTSHIPS IN SCIENCE AND HERITAGE

AHRC and EPSRC are jointly offering around 10 Collaborative Research Studentships in the area of science and heritage.

The aim of these awards (known as CASE by some Research Councils) is to promote partnerships and research collaboration between academia and other bodies. The awards will offer doctoral students the chance to conduct their research in collaboration with a non-academic body, and to gain experience of work outside the academic sphere.

The closing date for this competition is 16.00 on Thursday 6th December 2007.

We recommend that you read the Details of the Call document before starting to prepare your proposal.   These can be found at:

SCIENCE AND HERITAGE PROGRAMME CALL FOR INTERDISCIPLINARY RESEARCH GRANTS

Funding for between five and eight Interdisciplinary Research Grant proposals (depending on value and quality) is now available from the AHRC/EPSRC Science and Heritage Programme to support creative, cross-disciplinary research activities.

Each project will have a maximum full economic cost of £800,000, and a duration of 1 to 3 years. Proposals for 3 year grants may propose a maximum of three studentships in association with the project.

Proposals will need to be submitted by an eligible Research Organisation, but must involve collaboration with at least one other organisation. Priority will be given to proposals which involve a wide range of organisations, including higher education institutions, heritage organisations, museums, galleries, libraries and archives, practitioner communities, commerce and industry either within or outside the UK. Priority will also be given to outline proposals which involve people and disciplines from the remits of both AHRC and EPSRC, offering a diversity of expertise and experience.

The Interdisciplinary Research Grants competition will be conducted in 2 stages:

1. An outline phase - closing date Thursday 14th May 2009
